Nā Haumāna’s Journey

Nā Haumāna brings the Pacific Islands to life, through music and dance, while perpetuating the values of lifelong learning, community, ohana and the foundation of aloha.

Nā Haumāna first began in October of 2018 by the Garner Ohana. In July of 2021, the Garner Ohana left the kūleana of Nā Haumāna to Louella Sumler.  Since then Nā Haumāna has grown in numbers, education, cultural awareness, and giving back to our community here on Moku Honu, referred by the Native Indigenous People of this land as Turtle Island, better known as “The Mainland” by the settlers.

Nā Haumāna continues to be directed by Aunty Louella, with the blessing of Aunty Gina Kehau Redira of Kehau’s Hula Ohana. Along with Nā Haumāna’s Alaka’i (leaders/instructors), Stephanie Baney & Katrina McKenzie, Nā Haumāna has continued to grow in so many ways. We are now home to over 70 haumāna, plus an extended ohana including our sister hālau, Ha’a Hula/ Te Reva O Te Manu (directed by Kumu Malou Kamaile Smith).

As we strive to perpetuate the cultures of the Pacific Islands, we are incredibly grateful for Aunty Noe Noe Kekaualua and Uncle Earl DeLeon, who have joined our ohana as cultural advisors. Under their guidance, we continue our journey of cultural learning with the foundation of aloha.

With their support, our hālau is now deeply rooted in all things Hawai’i.  Not only the place, but in the way we carry out our daily lives. By educating, perpetuating, and cultivating the foundation of Aloha in all that we do. We root ourselves here at home by honoring the path that all our kūpuna (ancestors) have paved to bring us all here today, and by honoring the cultures we have been blessed to learn from.

We will continue to move forward as an ohana. Every time, all the time. Mahalo for all your support.
